For the Te Kupenga exhibition held at the Hastings Community Art Centre in February 2013, I had the opportunity to make an idea which had been brewing away in the back of my mind.
These panels were inspired initially by images of kuia wrapped in woollen tartan blankets at the Marae, and by my own warm childhood memories of my kuia.
I have re-generated the patterns of the tukutuku, using crosstitch on preloved woollen blankets, to create a sense of balance between the 2 patterns of my cultures.
The blankets themselves become a metaphor for the warmth evoked by being surrounded by familiar patterns, and by both spiritual warmth, and physical warmth.
It also was an opportunity to collaborate with another artist, Emanuel Dunn, who works with corrugated cardboard.
